Does Hair Loss Medication Weaken Sexual Stamina? - Understanding Side Effects

Updated: Nov 26, 2024

Question

My father has male pattern baldness, and I've started noticing some thinning myself. I'm concerned about how this might impact my confidence and work. I’ve heard that hair loss medication can affect sexual stamina. Is it the right time for me to start treatment, and can hair loss itself affect sexual health?

Answer

If you notice an increase in hair loss, especially in the morning or after washing your hair, it's a good idea to see a doctor. The two FDA-approved medications for male pattern baldness are finasteride and dutasteride. Because these medications can have side effects, it's important to discuss your options with a healthcare provider.

What is "Stamina" and Sexual Health?

The term "stamina" is often used to refer to sexual performance, but what does it truly mean? For a satisfying sexual experience, both erectile function and ejaculation control are important.

Strong erectile function can boost confidence, while issues like premature ejaculation can create stress for both partners. Additionally, persistent problems with ejaculation may sometimes contribute to or be linked with erectile dysfunction.

What Causes Hair Loss?

Hair loss typically refers to noticeable thinning or balding in areas where hair should grow. Losing about 50-70 hairs a day is normal, but losing more than 100 hairs a day may mean you're experiencing hair loss. Hair grows in cycles: Most of our hair is in the growth phase (85-90%), with some in regression (1-3%) and resting (10-14%).

How do hair loss drugs work?

Finasteride and dutasteride block enzymes that convert testosterone to DHT, a hormone associated with hair loss. Finasteride targets type 2 5-alpha reductase and acts primarily on the scalp and prostate. Dutasteride blocks both type 1 and type 2 and works on the scalp, liver, prostate, and sebaceous glands.

These medicines help slow down hair loss in men who are losing their hair. You will need to take this medicine for at least three months to see results.

You must continue to take this medicine to maintain the results.

Do hair loss medications have side effects that affect sexual health?

Sexual side effects, such as decreased libido or erectile changes, are reported in less than 10% of patients taking finasteride or dutasteride; these symptoms usually improve after six months. These drugs are not recommended for women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

The routine recommendation for regular PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing starts at age 50 for average-risk men.

If you're concerned about side effects, talk to a doctor about whether hair loss medication is right for you.
